Let's face it people!! It is obvious that issues concerning sexuality have simply gone haywire these days. Sex is meant to be private but there seems to be little privacy in our sexually saturated culture. From cybersex in chat rooms to discussions of sexual positions among youngsters (in public transports..I must add!!), there is simply little mystique left.
I have recently read an article that said sex between kids aged 12 to 16 is officially tolerated in the Netherlands. You can find many articles on the Internet talking abt this topic. One example is http://www.cnsnews.com/SpecialReports/archive/200607/SPE20060726a.html. I find this notion totally unacceptable as these youngsters will clearly be missing out on the reverence of having sex.
I personally regard virginity as a sacred gift that should be preserved for that one and only person....my spouse! In my opinion, abstinence before marriage should be the way to go. Then again, while it is ideal to have a value system of abstinence, it is true that these programs are just unrealistic for the majority of youngsters these days.
People are starting to have sex at such a young age and therefore goverments feel that the next best thing is to prepare these youngsters for the consequences though means of sex education. But u know....I'm very, very worried abt the values that we are imparting to these younsgters. By promoting safe sex, it is as good as telling them to go ahead and have sex.
Today, you'll see many, many articles that states that the correct use of contraception must be emphasised as a prevention against teenage pregnancies and Aids. But, hello........are these youngsters taking heed at all????????? I doubt so...
Why I say that?? U can search around for Durex surveys (u know..the condom manufacturer).. and u can see in the statistics that alot of youngsters are still indifferent abt practising safe sex. In fact, the more sex partners they have, the less likely condoms are used. Then again, although condoms can protect against infections like gonorrhea and HIV, they are less effective in protecting against skin-to-skin infections like genital herpes and syphilis, which dodges condoms anyway.
The reality of Asian teens shows that there is seriously something wrong in the way parents communicate with their kids abt sex. Talking abt sex is still very much a cultural taboo in many countries, including in my homeland Singapore. With lack of information at home, teens tend to turn to the Internet for answers, which in my opinion, often end up a menace rather than help. Sex from the mass media mainly focus on materials like pronography and cybersex which give tacit approval to the gratification of sexual urges...GGRRRRRR!!!
No doubt that much of the Internet's charm is the anonymity it guarantees...plus of cos, the no touching aspect of things, which people often view as the license to be sexual. Online relationships are obviously not as complex as real ones since individuals don't hv to deal with each other's looks or unpleasant personal habits. And the beauty of it is...a simple click of the mouse will end contact IMMEDIATELY.
But u know...if u watch shows like Oprah or other documentaries...u'll realise that online sexual activity is already becoming a major cause of relationship breakdowns. This problem only stands to get far worse considering that the number of Internet users continues to grow by the minute.
Although cybersex does not involve the exchange of body fluids, I would feel equally betrayed and hurt just as I would if skin-to-skin adultery were to take place. I have ZERO tolerance for people who minimise the consequences of cyber-infidelity and believe that by condoning such an act will only deteriorate our already disintegrated moral values.
Well....let's cut to the chase! My main point is...nobody wants to go back to an oppressive, sex-is-dirty era but we must realise that sexual liberation came with a price, which may well be too high to pay. Many, many youngsters have accepted sexual freedom and many released themselves of protocols that sex should be monogamous and marital. Sex is supposed to be a hush-hush activity but....u know...and I know...that it has very, very public repercussions that can easily crumble our society.
