Like most Eurasians, Kirk took Malay as a 2nd language in school but flunk badly (he scored F9 for his 'O' Levels..so to sum up, it's bad). And in the 7 years we've been together, we've always conversed to each in other in English except for some occassional usage of common Malay words such 'makan', 'tido' etc.
What I wanna share today is about his hilarious attempt to speak to me in Malay this morning.
As always, I'll get out of bed to walk him to the door. I wasn't wearing my spectacles this morning so everything looks pretty blurry. So, I stood in front of me while he started putting on his jacket and putting some documents in his bag. At one point, I saw him put a black thing into a pocket in his jacket.
I didnt get a good look at it! So I instantly asked, "What is the thing that you just put in your jacket?".
And he replied, "MATA KUCI". I was like, "What???????? ".
He said again and I thought I heard, "MATA KUCING". Then, I blurted out, "MATA KUCING means cat's eyes".
Then he said, "Oh?? Errr....MATA CURI??? CURI MATA???". I giggled and I replied, "That means stolen eyes or to steal eyes!!".
I got impatient and asked again, "What the hell is that in your pocket??".
And he said, "My spectacles lar...................".
I was like, "Durh!!! You mean CERMIN MATA?"..
He said, "Oh...that's what its called aye!"
Moral of the story is:
Don't use the language if you know you suck at it!!
